JAMMU, July 12: The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has issued a stern warning to auto and e-rickshaw drivers against overcharging and refusing to adhere to the notified fare and functional fare metre.
Drivers found violating these rules will face punitive actions, including potential cancellation of their vehicle registration certificates (RCs) or driving licenses, warned the Department.
During an enforcement drive today, the department’s officials informed drivers that strict measures would be taken against those who overcharge commuters or fail to use fare meters.
This action follows numerous complaints of overcharging during the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Jammu, Pankaj Bhagotra, emphasized the department’s commitment to regulating auto and e-rickshaw operations. “We are determined to ensure that drivers follow the fare meter regulations. Refusal to ply, overcharging, or misbehaving with commuters will attract penalties as per the license conditions,” he stated.
Bhagotra also stressed the need for drivers to be courteous with commuters to maintain road discipline.
“The enforcement wing of the Transport Department is closely monitoring auto and e-rickshaw operations to ensure compliance with the fare guidelines, especially during the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra,” he further said.
The enforcement drive, supervised by RTO Jammu Pankaj Bhagotra, today covered several locations, including Bhagwati Nagar, Tawi Fourth Bridge, Near Railway Station, and Zorawar Chowk.
During the drive, 260 vehicles were checked, resulting in 97 autos and e-rickshaws being e-challaned for offences such as overcharging, overloading, and lack of proper documents.
Additionally, one e-rickshaw was seized for being operated by an underage driver and was handed over to the In-charge of the Bhagwati Nagar Police Post.
The enforcement team included ARTO (Headquarters) Rehana Tabassam, MVIs Vikas Srivats and Jagandeep Singh, and MVTA Tarunjot Singh.
