JAMMU, July 15: In a joint overnight operation by team of Forest Range Purmandal along with police party from Vijaypur Police Station, a habitual Khair-wood smuggler Yunus Bakkerwal was arrested from Forest Compartment No.1 (Aik) while felling green Khair trees.
A Forest officer said the accused namely Younus Bakerwal, son of Gamma Bakerwal, resident of Baguna in Purmandal area was arrested on the spot last midnight from Forest Compartment 01, Aik of Purmandal Forest Range, falling under Samba Forest Division.
The smuggler was converting Khair wood into commercial size Billets after felling two green Khair trees from forest. The accused was arrested on the spot and lodged in Police Station Vijaypur and further investigation by Forest team Purmandal started. The Khair wood was also seized by the team and shifted Range Office, Purmandal.
It is pertinent to mention that this smuggler was involved in various forest offenses including complaints of costly Khair wood and bovine smuggling. The whole operation was lead by Range Officer Purmandal Naresh Sharma under the supervision of DFO Samba, Sagar Singh. The team was investigating the forward links of the smuggler. An FIR has been registered against him.
