Waqf employees await pay for extended service

SRINAGAR, July 20: Two employees of the Waqf Board alleged that they were not paid for services rendered after their official tenures ended, despite being asked to continue their duties for an additional three months.
The employees, whose original tenures concluded on December 31, 2023, claim they were requested to extend their work due to a shortage of skilled manpower within the Waqf Board.
Their extension was also seen as recognition of their meritorious service. “We were contacted via a message and, after receiving it, resumed our duties. Having worked in the department for the last 30 years, we trusted the higher-ups. But when our extension ended, we were not paid for reasons unknown,” one employee said.
Another employee noted that while they remain unpaid, the board has granted a six-month extension to an engineer within the department. This disparity has caused financial strain, with the employees struggling to cover essential expenses, including medical bills.
Compounding their difficulties, they said the Waqf Board has stopped the pensions of several retired employees, exacerbating their financial woes. This decision has left former staff members in a state of despair, unsure of how to manage without their expected pension benefits.
