Srinagar, July 23: The students at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Bomai in north Kashmir’s Sopore have developed a School Voting Machine (SVM) in the Atal Tinkering Laboratory (ATL) at their school.
This innovative project, created jointly by Madiha Javaid, Malik Suhail and Suhaan under the guidance of their mentor teacher and ATL in-charge, aims to streamline the process of school elections by ensuring error-free voting without any hassle.
In their project briefing, the students emphasized that the SVM will not only facilitate the election of class representatives and school leaders but also prepare them for democratic processes.
The group explained that they designed the SVM to conduct school-level elections, such as nominating class or school representatives, with the help of ATL.
“The machine has potential applications in local elections, such as block, mohalla, or municipality elections,” said one of the students, Malik Suhail.
He noted that the traditional pen-and-paper method used in school elections is cumbersome and prone to errors.
Suhaan, who handled the coding for the project in C++, showcased the machine’s capabilities during a live demonstration, explaining its features and functionality.
Sajad Akbar, the mentor teacher, said that what the students have designed is a pure innovation and that nothing of this sort is currently available in the market.
“The idea was given by the Principal, and the students implemented it using their creativity and skills; it has the potential to reach the national level,” he said.
Notably, around 17 schools, including four private schools in the Baramulla district, are equipped with ATL, funded by NITI Aayog.
