US imposes sanctions related to Houthi weapons procurement

WASHINGTON, July 31: The US Department of the Treasury announced on Wednesday that it sanctioned two people and four companies who allegedly facilitated weapons procurement for Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement, whose members are also known as Houthis, according to a release.

“Today, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is sanctioning two individuals and four companies that have facilitated weapons procurement for Ansar Allah, commonly referred to as the Houthis,” the release said.

The sanctions targeted Sanaa-based logistics company Al-Shahari United Corporation Ltd., which has allegedly facilitated shipments of components for Houthi missile and drone manufacturing from suppliers in China, and its Guangzhou-based branch, Guangzhou Alshahari United Corporation.

They also targeted Guangzhou Alshahari’s owner in Hong Kong, Hongkong Alshahari United Corporation Limited, and its director and general manager, Ahmed Khaled Yahya Al-Shahare.

Sanctions were also imposed on Sanaa-based Yemen Telecommunication Asset Company for Information Technology, which has allegedly supported weapons and component procurement for the Houthis, and its general manager, Maher Yahya Muhammad Mutahar al-Kinai. (UNI)
