Rain causes havoc, house collapses in Bathindi

JAMMU, Aug 1: A house collapsed in flash flood in a Nallah in Bathindi area of Jammu, an elderly man washed away in Tawi, a Traffic Constable was seriously injured in shooting stones incident near Ramban while Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked at four places due to landslides and falling of boulders in Ramban sector today.

Official sources said that heavy rain during morning hours wreaked havoc in many areas of Jammu City as flooded water from small nallahs and drains entered many houses and shops causing damage to the public property. Even many lanes specially in Nanak Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Sanjay Nagar, Nai Basti, Jeevan Nagar, Preet Nagar, Gangyal and several other areas were flooded.
Most of the rivers and Nallahs were flooded today and caused disruption in traffic movement during morning houses. The flood level in Chenab river reached 28 ft and little above while Tawi was also flowing at 7 ft today. However, the water level receded in the river after 12 noon.
At Abubaker Colony falling under Bathindi, an old house constructed just at the bank of seasonal Nallah collapsed. A non- resident family was living in this house. During heavy rain as the flood water entered the house during early morning hours, the family escaped for safety. Later, the house collapsed. This Nallah caused damage to the walls and foundation of several other houses in the locality. The household goods of the family headed by Mohan Khushwah were damaged or washed away.
In flooded Tawi, the dead body of an unknown elderly person was noticed by the locals and they informed police. The police and SDRF men fished out the body near Gujjar Nagar. The man appeared to be in his 60s and is believed to have washed away in the flood. The body was shifted to the mortuary of GMC Hospital, Bakshi Nagar.
Another report from Ramban said that a Traffic SGCT, Kuljinder Singh posted in Ramban area was serious injured after a shooting stone from the mountain hit him at Mehar. He was regulating traffic at that time. His both legs were fractured. He was referred to GMC Jammu from Ramban district hospital.

Due to land/mudslides at Mehar, Marog, Hingni, Kishtwari Pathar and Panthyal , the Jammu-Srinagar highway remained blocked for about two hours during morning. It was raining in the entire region. The traffic along with Shri Amarnath Ji yatra was, however, restored after two hours.
Reports from Reasi said that due to bad weather and rain, the helicopter service to Mata Vaishnodevi shrine from base camp Katra remained suspended for several hours today. However, the yatra along the track remained undisrupted.
Meanwhile, the report of rain were also received from Samba, Kathua and parts of Udhampur but no loss of public property was reported. During rain the power supply to many areas remained suspended for several hours.
A MeT official said that Jammu recorded 47.8 mm rainfall, Katra 72.9 mm while Batote 20.8 mm during last 24 hours. With today’s rain Jammu’s day temperature dropped to 29.2 deg C, about 4 deg C below normal. Katra recorded 27 deg C while Bhaderwah registered 24.4 deg C day temperature today.
