JAMMU, Aug 2: General Secretary of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) and DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony today led a deputation of Jeevan Nagar residents to meet with Divisional Commissioner Jammu, seeking immediate intervention in the ongoing issue of inadequate desilting of Nallahs by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED), which has been a cause of significant distress for the local residents.
The deputation included prominent social activists Suman Choudhary, Poonam, Kamlesh and Capt Ghar Singh who have been at the forefront of this issue. Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Tony emphasized the criminal negligence displayed by UEED despite repeated representations by the affected residents.
He pointed out the urgent need to replace the current culvert bridges, which are constructed on multiple pillars, with pillar-less bridges to ensure the free flow of water. The existing structure, he explained, restricts water flow, leading to severe overflow of Nallahs during the monsoon, exacerbated by UEED’s failure to desilt them.
Later, the deputation also held a meeting with the Chief Engineer of PWD where in Superintending Engineer PWD, Executive Engineer Suraj Sharma and Assistant Executive Engineer MS Khan were also present.
Tony urged for stern action against the UEED officials, including the suspension of concerned officials, holding them accountable for the tragic death of Ujjalwal Singh, whose body was discovered in the Landoi Nallah in Chatha under the jurisdiction of Police Station Satwari.
He stressed that these officials are responsible for the significant loss of public property and urged the Divisional Commissioner to ensure that the damages suffered by the poor residents are compensated by the Red Cross and the Government.
In response, the Divisional Commissioner assured the delegation that he would discuss the matter of desilting of Nallahs with PWD and the Red Cross, and convene a meeting with UEED to address their demands.
Later, a team of PWD engineers visited the affected areas and assured the residents that a proposal for the replacement of all four bridges would be prepared and submitted to the Government for necessary funding.
