2 children die, 21 fall sick due to food poisoning

UDHAMPUR, Aug 2: Two children died and more than 20 others fell ill, some of them seriously, due to food poisoning in a marriage function at village Satyalta in Ghordi, Ramnagar.

Two of the ailing persons have been referred to Government Medical College Hospital Jammu because of their serious condition while 21 others are admitted at District Hospital Udhampur.

Superintendent of the DH Udhampur, Dr Sanjay told the Excelsior that condition of those admitted in the District Hospital was stable and out of danger.
“Two minor girls were brought here dead this morning and soon 15 others, including nine children, showing symptoms of intense vomiting and diarrhoea were admitted to the hospital,” he said and added that six persons reported to the hospital in late evening.
Reports said that the victims had yesterday attended marriage function of Hukam Chand’s daughter at village Satyalta in Ghordi area where they were served Rice, Rajma, Ambal and Paneer (cheese). Soon after they ate at the event, most of them started complaining of persistent stomach pain, high fever and diarrhoea.
As condition of some of them started further deteriorating, they were taken to District Hospital Udhampur. However, 15-year old Shobu, daughter of Mohan Lal and 4-year old Mohit, son of Parsohtam, both residents of Ghordi, Barmeen, died on way to Udhampur.
Those referred to GMC Hospital Jammu because of their serious condition, were identified as Mohan Lal (34) son of Kaka Ram of Satyalta and Anju (24) of Ghordi.
Toshi Devi (20) of Dindla, Parleesh (50) of Satyalta, Gian Chand (71) of Bashti, Pawan Kumar (13) of Satyalta, Dev Raj (19) of Satyalta, Payal (12) Barmeen, Mamta Devi (12) of Barmeen, Balver (15) of Barmeen, Jyoti Devi (15), Sanjeev Kumar (13) of Satyalta, Amit (11) of Satyalta, Seema (16) of Satyalta and Kulvinder (9) of Satyalta are undergoing treatment at District Hospital Udhampur.
Six more persons were on way to Udhampur for admission in the hospital till last reports came in. Police have taken cognizance of the matter even as it was an apparent case of food poisoning.
