Srinagar, Aug 6: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today criticized the Government for its move to introduce amendments to the Waqf Act, demanding that it be made public and reviewed by a committee of Muslim scholars.
Speaking to media persons, PDP’s senior leader, Basharat Bukhari, said that the Government is targeting the country’s Muslims, and called for the Government to clarify the 40 amendments it seeks to make.
“The Act currently in place was formulated by Parliament. What are these 40 amendments the Government wants to make? This is wrong, and they will gain nothing from it,” he said.
He stressed that any changes to the existing Waqf Act must be brought into the public domain so that people can understand what is being done and why. Additionally, a committee of scholars should be formed to review the amendments.
He alleged that the BJP Government has been speaking and acting against Muslims, noting that the country’s Muslims have given them a befitting reply through voting.
“I salute the Muslims of this country; they were being instigated, but they chose to speak through their votes, reducing the BJP’s seats to 240 in the Lok Sabha elections,” he said.
Bukhari added that if the bill is to be brought forward, it must first pass through the cabinet before being brought to Parliament.
Earlier, while addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, Bukhari demanded the return of the power projects to J&K and compensation for losses caused by the Indus Water Treaty (IWT).
