Labourer drowns in Partap canal

AKHNOOR, Apr 7: A poor labourer engaged in  de-silting work of  Partap canal got trapped under a  `Puli’ in the canal near Jourian and drowned after  the Irrigation Department officials at Akhnoor suddenly released water this afternoon.
Reports said the mishap took place at around 1.30 pm when the labourer  Daleep Kumar (34), son of Mansa Ram of Jourian area, was removing silt from the canal from the narrow  portion of the channel under a `Puli’.  Suddenly, some officials released canal water from river Chenab without issuing any warning to the workers engaged at work. While some managed to escape, Daleep got trapped in the narrow channel and drowned.
Later, his body was fished out by some people of the area. This incident evoked strong protest  from villagers and family members and relatives of the deceased. The police took cognizance of the matter and started investigation. No senior official from Irrigation Department reached the spot after incident. Later, police shifted body of the victim to Akhnoor Hospital for postmortem. The people were demanding action against the officials responsible for the death of innocent worker and compensation for his family.
