Police arrests Interstate Khair wood smuggler

SAMBA, Aug 9: Police have arrested an interstate Khair wood smuggler in the jurisdiction of Police Station (PS) Ghagwal in district Samba.
Police said during the course of investigation of Case FIR No.78/2024 U/S 379 IPC, 26 Indian Forest Act registered at Police Station Ghagwal, a police team of PS Ghagwal headed by SHO Ghagwal after using technical and physical surveillance zeroed in and apprehended an Interstate Khair wood smuggler who used to cut Khair trees from Ghagwal and its adjoining areas, loaded in his vehicle and sold them to Punjab. He was illegally smuggling ‘Khair’ wood from Ghagwal to Punjab via Kathua, police added.
The arrested person has been identified as Deepak Sharma alias Maama son of Puran Chand of Mehrajpur tehsil Mahreen district Kathua. Further investigation of the case is underway, police said.
