‘Drug traffickers’ properties worth Rs 14 cr attached recently’

JAMMU, Aug 9: With the arrest of an individual from Punjab in the Bus Stand area here, Jammu and Kashmir Police today claimed to have recovered 33 kilograms of high-quality heroin worth Rs 33 crore.

Sharing details about the recovery, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jammu Zone, Anand Jain, said that the Jammu and Kashmir Police received information from reliable sources about two persons carrying a suspicious bag coming to the Jammu Bus Stand from a border area.

Accordingly, he said, a naka was established, and one of the suspects, a resident of Punjab, was arrested.
Upon searching his bag, the ADGP Jammu said that 33 kilograms of fine-quality heroin worth around Rs 33 crore was recovered from his possession.
“The cost of the recovered consignment could even exceed,” claimed the police officer.
When asked where the consignment was picked up by the accused, Jain said, “From preliminary investigation, it appears the consignment was picked up from some border area, but details about where it was supposed to be delivered cannot be shared at this time since the matter is under investigation.”
Asked whether Pakistan’s role in pushing the narcotics to the region has emerged, the police officer said, “Nothing can be stated right now.”
“Further details about whether the consignment was dropped using a drone or whether the accused is a minor cannot be shared due to the matter being in the initial stage of investigation,” he added.
Earlier, in an official statement, police said that the Bus Stand Police Station in Jammu received information from reliable sources that one Harmeet Singh (name changed) was coming from Akhnoor towards Jammu Bus Stand with a suspicious bag.
Accordingly, a naka was laid, and the suspect was apprehended with 26 packets of heroin weighing approximately 32-33 kilograms”, read the statement.
“In this regard, an FIR number 41/2024 under Sections 8, 21, 22 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Bus Stand. Prima facie, it appears that the accused obtained the consignment from border areas and was transporting it to Punjab,” it added.
Meanwhile, ADGP Anand Jain said that the Jammu and Kashmir Police have recently attached properties worth Rs 14 crore acquired through the proceeds of narcotics in Jammu Province.
According to him, the highest seizure of Rs 8 crore worth of properties was made in Jammu District, followed by Rs 4 crore in Rajouri, Rs 1 crore in Samba District, Rs 70 lakh in Kathua, Rs 40 lakh in Poonch and Rs 24 lakh in Reasi Districts.
With this, he said that 23 people have been arrested under the PIT NDPS Act recently in the three districts of Jammu, Samba, and Kathua for their involvement in drug trafficking and paddling.
