Maruti to recall 1,03,311 units of Ertiga, Swift, DZire

NEW DELHI, Apr 11:  In one of the biggest vehicle recalls, Maruti Suzuki India is recalling 1,03,311 units of its popular models — Ertiga, Swift and DZire — manufactured between November 12, 2013 and February 4, 2014 to replace faulty fuel filler neck.

The company said the recall will impact 42,481 units of DZire, 47,237 units of Swift and 13,593 units of Ertiga.

“This exercise is limited to vehicles within the above specified range and does not pertain to any other vehicle of the company,” Maruti Suzuki India said in a statement.

Explaining the reasons for the recall, it said in the affected vehicles there is a possibility of fuel smell and in extreme condition there may be some fuel leakage, if filled up to the fuel cap, beyond the ‘auto cutoff level’.

“Maruti Suzuki dealers will contact owners of all vehicles in the above mentioned range. The company will replace the fuel filler neck free of cost,” it added.

The new fuel filler necks are being dispatched to the dealer workshops.

“Considering the number of vehicles impacted, the company is building up stock of the required component at its dealer workshops, before inviting customers,” MSI said.

The recall is the company’s largest after its recall of about one lakh units of its flagship export model ‘A-Star’ in February 2010 to replace a faulty fuel pump part.

The company said Swift, Dzire and Ertiga customers, who have bought their cars post November 12, 2013 can check the company website to ascertain if their car is among affected by the recall.

Last year, MSI had recalled 1,492 units of Ertiga, Swift, Dzire and A-Star models produced in October 2013 to rectify a possible problem with steering column.

Earlier this week, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said it would recall 44,989 units of multi-purpose vehicle Innova manufactured between February 2005 and December 2008 in India to rectify a faulty cable on the steering wheel.

The move was part of a global recall of 6.39 million vehicles announced by Japanese parent Toyota Motor Corp, the world’s biggest car manufacturer.

Automobile companies have been pro-active in recalling vehicles in case of safety issues since industry body SIAM initiated a voluntary recall policy in 2012.

General Motor India had also recalled 1.14 lakh units of its multi-purpose vehicle Chevrolet Tavera last year, manufactured between 2005 and 2013, to address emissions and specification issues. It is the biggest recall in India till date. (PTI)
