JAMMU, Aug 22: Resident doctors of Government Medical College and Associated Hospitals (GMC&AH) Jammu have called off their strike, which was continued for the past seven days in solidarity with the protest over the rape case of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, and resumed their routine duties immediately.
“Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) at GMC Jammu has decided to call off the strike following Chief Justice of India’s significant remarks in the Supreme Court regarding the tragic incident,” said Dr Sandeep Singh, president of the Association in a handout issued this evening.
He said given the Supreme Court assurance of the thorough investigation to ensure justice, the RDA at GMC Jammu has decided to resume our duties immediately. “We believe that this is the critical moment to return to our work with renewed focus and determination, knowing that the legal process is actively addressing the concern that prompted our strike,” he stated.
“We hope that this decision will contribute positively to the ongoing efforts to secure justice for the victim and restore normalcy within our medical institutions,” the RDA president added.
Pertinently, while hearing the suo motu case on the RG Kar Medical College murder-rape of a trainee doctor, a Supreme Court bench headed by the Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud today emphasized the need for swift and impartial investigation to ensure that justice is served, and appealed to the protesting doctors to return back to work, saying that ”their abstention will affect people who are in need of public health services”.
Earlier in the morning, the resident doctors of GMC & AH Jammu staged a strong protest in front of the OPD complex in GMC Jammu, demanding swift and thorough investigation into the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder incident, and nationwide implementation of ‘Central Protection Act’ to safeguard the entire medical fraternity.
