KATHUA, Aug 22: A historic event unfolded in Kathua district today as a remarkable act of organ donation took place.
A patient, who had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Associated Hospital, Government Medical College (GMC) Kathua, following a severe head injury from an accident, unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. In a profound gesture of humanity, the patient’s family expressed their wish to donate his organs, hoping to give others the gift of life.
Given that the patient had already passed away, only his eyes could be donated, as eye retrieval must occur within a specific timeframe after death. However, GMC Kathua currently lacks an organ retrieval team, a critical requirement for conducting such procedures. In response to this situation, a specialized team of doctors from GMC Jammu, under the supervision of Dr Bhavya, was promptly dispatched to Kathua to perform the eye retrieval. The retrieved corneas will now be used for transplantation, offering the possibility of restored vision to those in need.
This event is particularly significant as GMC Kathua has applied for official registration as an “Organ Retrieval Centre.” Once this registration is approved, GMC Kathua will be fully equipped to conduct all organ retrievals for donations in the future. This first successful eye donation marks an important step towards achieving that goal, symbolizing hope and progress for the district’s healthcare services.
