Srinagar, Sept 6: The Department of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) at SKIMS has successfully performed a life-saving surgery on a 60-year-old patient with a rare heart condition, giving him a new lease of life.
The patient, a boat rider by profession and an active smoker with no prior health issues, suddenly experienced chest pain and breathlessness, according to SKIMS.
He was initially taken to a corporate private hospital, where an ECG suggested a heart attack, and an ECHO revealed acute mitral regurgitation with a torn chordae and complete prolapse of the anterior mitral leaflet.
Dr. Farooq Ganie, Associate Professor of CVTS at SKIMS, who led the surgical team, explained that the patient was promptly referred to the Cardiology Department at SKIMS Soura, where he was thoroughly evaluated.
“After discussions with the CVTS team, emergency surgery was planned. Upon admission, the patient was in cardiogenic shock, hemodynamically unstable, and suffering from pulmonary edema,” SKIMS said.
The patient was immediately resuscitated and stabilized with inotropic support before being shifted to the operation theatre, where the surgery proceeded without complications.
Post-surgery, the patient was transferred to the CVTS ICU and placed on mechanical ventilation with multiple inotropic supports.
“He was extubated just six hours after the surgery and is now recovering well, expected to be discharged soon,” SKIMS said.
Dr. Ganie noted that patients presenting with such a condition-acute mitral regurgitation secondary to infarction requiring valve replacement-face a mortality rate of 80-90% even in the world’s best cardiac centers.
Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, Director of SKIMS, commended the CVTS Department, along with the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, for their successful handling of the case.
The surgical team was led by Dr. Farooq Ahmad Ganie and included Dr. Abid, Dr. Mudasir, and Dr. Ajmal.
