JAMMU, Sept 8: The Consumer Welfare Association (CWA) of Jammu held a meeting to discuss pressing consumer issues and called for immediate action by the authorities to resolve public grievances.
General secretary, JK Khajuria briefed members on the Association’s recent activities, highlighting that their efforts continued even during the pandemic through online platforms. He shared that CWA Jammu participated in national events, such as World Consumer Rights Day, organized by the Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards, where they engaged with consumer forums across the country via Webex.
During the meeting, several key issues were raised. The CWA expressed concern over frequent price hikes of essential commodities, including vegetables, based on market reports and numerous public complaints. They criticized the lack of regulatory measures and called for authorities to coordinate efforts to control these price fluctuations and provide relief to consumers.
Another major concern discussed was the frequent power supply failures and unusually high electricity bills, particularly after the installation of smart meters. The CWA urged electricity authorities to address these issues, as consumers were reportedly being charged excessively, even during periods of minimal or no usage.
The Association also emphasized the urgent need for the revival of State Consumer Councils, which are mandated under the Central and State Consumer Protection Acts. They noted that the councils are essential for ensuring the protection of consumer rights and their smooth functioning.
The meeting was attended by key members, including president Chander Prakash, senior vice president MS Jamwal, patrons AK Kaul and Prof KR Padha, senior member AK Arora, general secretary Joginder Kumar Khajuria and secretary-in-charge of finance Chander Udhay Sharma.
The CWA called for swift action by the concerned authorities to address these consumer issues and improve public welfare.
