JAMMU, Sept 9: Former Minister of J&K and ex-MLA of Jammu East, Yogesh Sawhney today lambasted the Government for the severe problems caused due to the installation of faulty smart meters across Jammu city.
While interacting with the people, Sawhney criticized both the Government and the local administration for their failure to address the rising concerns of the locals, who are bearing the brunt of these flawed devices.
He said, “Smart meters, which were introduced under the guise of modernization, have instead caused undue hardships to the people of Jammu.”
The senior Congress leader said that the residents, during his visit to Jammu East, have reported a range of issues stemming from the faulty smart meters, including inaccurate readings leading to inflated bills.
“There have even been many incidents of smart meters catching fire, putting both lives and property at risk. Furthermore, the harsh enforcement of bill payments has added to the woes of citizens. Power connections are disconnected with barely 12 hours’ notice in cases of non-payment. The implementation of smart meters against all public greivances and then the subsequent failure to address or alleviate these genuine concerns of the people completely goes against and undermines the principles of a welfare state as outlined in the Indian Constitution,” he said.
“Technology should be a tool that improves lives, not something that worsens them. The current implementation of smart meters has created more problems than it has solved,” he added.
