BJP, Cong noted faces join fray on last day of nominations

242 file papers for 24 seats of Jammu

JAMMU, Sept 12: With nominations for third and final phase of polling ending today, a total of 242 contestants have filed their papers for 24 Assembly seats of four districts in the Jammu division which will go to polls on October 1.

On last day, many bigwigs from BJP, Congress, other parties and Independents joined the election fray.

Prominent among those who filed their nomination papers today include Devender Singh Rana (Nagrota), Surjit Singh Slathia (Samba), Yudhvir Sethi (Jammu East), Rajiv Sharma (Chhamb), Dr Bharat Bushan (Kathua) and Surinder Bhagat (Marh), all from BJP.
Congress leader who joined the contest were Tara Chand (Chhamb), Dr Manohar Lal Sharma (Billawar), Sumit Magotra (Udhampur West), Neeraj Kundan (Bishnah) and Mool Raj (Ramnagar) among others.
BJP Election Incharge for Jammu and Kashmir Ram Madhav, former Union Minister and Lok Sabha member Anurag Thakur and Jammu-Reasi seat BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma accompanied Devender Singh Rana in filing nomination papers from Nagrota. Rana held a massive road show and rally before filing the papers/
There was no let up in rebellion within the BJP.
BJP’s DDC Member from Ramnagar Mool Raj today filed papers from Ramnagar Assembly constituency as Congress candidate. Another BJP leader Shivdev Singh, former MLA, has joined the fray from Jammu North seat as an Independent candidate against Sham Lal Sharma (BJP) and Ajay Sadhotra (NC backed by Congress) among others.
Congress also faced revolt when party leader Satish Sharma son of two-time MP and ex Minister Madan Lal Sharma jumped into election fray as an Independent candidate from Chhamb on being denied the party mandate. He held a massive rally and road show before filing papers.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami accompanied Surjit Singh Slathia while filing his papers from Samba seat. Dhami addressed a rally and held road show before the BJP candidate filed nominations.
Union Minister GK Reddy joined the BJP candidates Rajiv Sharma and Surinder Bhagat at the time of filing papers from Chhamb and Marh seats respectively while Anurag Thakur, Jugal Kishore Sharma and Priya Sethi were with Yudhvir Sethi when he filed nominations.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh joined Bharat Bushan in filing papers from Kathua constituency. Bushan, a JKAS officer has taken VRS to join the BJP and enter electoral contest.
Rajesh Gupta filed the nomination from Jammu East seat as the BSP candidate. Jayesh Gupta filed papers from Bahu segment as an Independent candidate.
Prof Hans Raj, renowned veterinary surgeon, filed nomination papers from Suchetgarh Assembly seat as an Independent candidate.
Shashikant Khajuria, social activist and former banker has filed his papers from R S Pura – South seat as an Independent candidate.
A total of 242 candidates have filed nomination papers from 24 Assembly constituencies of Jammu division including 11 in Jammu district, six in Kathua, four in Udhampur and three in Samba district.
Highest number of 122 nominations have been filed in Jammu district, 47 in Kathua, 40 in Udhampur and 33 in Samba.
Scrutiny of the documents will be held tomorrow while September 17 is last date for withdrawal of nomination papers.
In Jammu division, for four seats in Udhampur district, a total of 13 candidates have filed nominations from 59-Udhampur West AC; 11 from 60-Udhampur East AC; 9 from 61-Chenani AC; while 7 candidates have filed nominations from 62-Ramnagar (SC) AC.
For six seats in Kathua district, 9 candidates have filed nomination from 63-Bani C; 5 from 64-Billawar AC; 7 from 65-Basohli C; 10 from 66-Jasrota C; 6 from 67-Kathua (SC) C; while 10 candidates have filed nominations from 68-Hiranagar AC.
In Samba district, 7 candidates have filed nomination from 69-Ramgarh (SC) C; 15 from 70-Samba and 11 from 71-Vijaypur.
For 11 seats in Jammu district, a total of 13 candidates have filed nominations from 72-Bishnah (SC); 14 from 73-Suchetgarh (SC); 14 from 74-R.S. Pura – Jammu South C; 12 from 75-Bahu C; 10 from 76-Jammu East C; 8 from 77-Nagrota C; 13 from 78-Jammu West C; 17 from 79-Jammu North C; 6 from 80-Marh (SC) C; 5 from 81-Akhnoor AC and 10 candidates have filed nominations from 82-Chhamb.
