JAMMU, Apr 19: Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu today decided to abstain from the work in all the courts for two days as a mark of protest against the police brutality against an advocate.
This decision was taken in a general house meeting of the Bar held in the District Court complex under the chairmanship of its president Senior Advocate M K Bhardwaj. The general house took serious note of brutal act of Gandhi Nagar Police against Advocate Harshvardhan Gupta, who was harassed and mercilessly beaten up for none of his fault.
“The concerned authorities have not taken action on our demand regarding initiating stern action against the erring police officials as such the general house has decided to suspend work for two days—Monday and Tuesday in protest against the police brutality against Advocate Harshvardhan”, general secretary of the Bar, Ranjeet S Jamwal said.
The general house unanimously demanded that erring police officials should be suspended and disciplinary action initiated against them. “No such incidents at any level or place would be tolerated and there should be an assurance from the concerned that lawyers would not be targeted selectively and harassed in future for none of their faults”, Mr Jamwal said.
The general house will assemble again to decide future course of action in case no action is taken against the erring police officials.
