Sir,
The recent decision by the Union Cabinet to extend health coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 and above under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) is a commendable step. With this policy, over six crore elderly individuals from 4.5 crore families will benefit from Rs 5 lakh free health insurance coverage. This initiative, irrespective of income status, brings much-needed relief to the most vulnerable section of society, ensuring their access to quality healthcare without the burden of financial constraints.
However, while the new distinct card for eligible beneficiaries is a welcome feature, it is crucial for the government to ensure effective implementation, especially in rural and underserved areas where awareness and access to healthcare services often lag. This progressive move will provide a safety net for our elderly, but constant monitoring and support are needed to ensure its success.
