Police warns against fraudsters posing as police officers

JAMMU, Oct 5: The Cyber Police Station Jammu has issued a warning to the public about fraudsters using intimidation tactics to commit financial fraud.
According to an advisory, these scammers are impersonating police officers to deceive people into paying money by claiming their family members are involved in criminal cases.
The fraudsters call victims, falsely stating that their wards have been arrested or are involved in serious offences, such as sex rackets, and demand payment to prevent their arrest, said the advisory.
It highlighted a recent case from Agra, where a woman suffered a fatal heart attack after being told by a scammer that her daughter had been caught in a sex racket.
The Cyber Police Jammu has cautioned the public to remain calm in such situations and not rush into making payments.
It reiterated that legitimate law enforcement agencies never demand money over the phone to avoid arrest.
“Citizens are advised to verify the identity of callers by asking for their name and the agency they claim to represent. If a warrant is mentioned, the public should directly contact the police or relevant authorities for confirmation,” warned the Cyber Police Station Jammu.
The advisory also warned against sharing personal credentials such as PINs and passwords.
In case of fraud, the public is urged to file complaints at the NCRP portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) or by calling the helpline at 1930.
“Be vigilant, be smart, and never fall victim to such traps,” advised the Cyber Police Station Jammu.
