Introducing semester system

Hot debate has ensued at academic levels in and outside the Jammu University whether introduction of new semester system for Graduation level and Choice Based Credit system at Post-Graduate level would be feasible. The UGC is planning educational reforms on a wider plane and this is among the contemplated reforms. In academic matters all State universities in J&K or outside J&K are governed by the norms set forth by the UGC. When UGC set forth the norm for new grades for faculties in the 6th Plan, the universities all over India welcomed it. In the same vein if the UGC recommends introduction of Semester system at Graduation level and Choice Based Credit system for PG level, this has to be accepted sooner or later. After all education cannot become a static subject and must change as per the requirements of the society.
Yes of course, there are logistical issues, financial issues, man power and above all technical issues like computerization and shifting from one format to another. Well these are all related issues and have to be resolved with patience. We agree that it may not be possible to introduce the new system from the new academic session as the time is short. But it is a change and has to be accepted. We are in a stage of development and funding and manpower are the primary requirements for development. The UGC, the HRD and the State Government all have to come together and discuss the issue and find a way out. The teaching faculty in Jammu University must be sanitized to introduce the new system and gear up to it.
