Omar set to become Chief Minister after NC gets 42 seats, Alliance 49

SRINAGAR, Oct 8: NC vice president Omar Abdullah, who won both the constituencies he contested from–Budgam and Ganderbal Assembly– with a comfortable majority, is all set to become Chief Minister of J&K. He will be the first CM of the UT of J&K.

Omar won from the party bastion of Ganderbal by defeating PDP’s Bashir Ahmad Mir by over 10,000 votes. He secured 32,727 votes, winning by a margin of 10,574 against his nearest rival Mir who polled 22,153 votes.

He also won the Budgam seat by a margin of 18,485 votes where he got 36010 votes and his rival PDP candidate Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi got 17525 votes.
Prominent among winners include NC vice president and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah; senior NC leader and former Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather; senior NC leader and former Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar, Senior NC leader and former Speaker, Mubarak Gul; former Minister and Congress president Tariq Hamid Karra; former Congress president and former Minister Ghulam Ahmad Mir and another former Congress president and former Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed and CPI (M) leader MY Tarigami.
Prominent among those who lost the elections include Apni Party chief Altaf Bukhari; former Minister and Apni Party leader, Ghulam Hassan Mir; former Minister and Apni party leader Imran Reza Ansari; former Minister Hakeem Yasin; former Minister Taj Mohiuddin; former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Beigh; former Minister and PDP leader Syed Basharat Bukhari; former Minister and PDP leader Abdul Rehman Veeri; former Minister and PDP leader Mehboob Baigh, former Minister and PDP leader Sartaj Madni; former Minister and PDP leader Aasiya Naqash; daughter of Mehbooba Mufti, Iltija Mufti; former Minister and NC leader, Nasir Aslam Wani and former Minister and NC leader, Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan.
Several other candidates made it to Assembly for sixth and fifth terms in the Assembly. Prominent among them is former Speaker Mubarak Gul, who won for the sixth term as an MLA from the Eidgah constituency in Srinagar. He polled 7700 votes.
CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami also won for the fifth straight term from the Kulgam seat by defeating Independent candidate Sayar Ahmad Reshi by 7838 votes. He polled 33634 votes.
The PDP’s Abdul Rehman Bhat- who had represented Bijbehara four times – could not make it for the fifth term as he lost to NC’s Reyaz Ahmad Khan from Shangus Anantnag East constituency. Khan secured 30345 votes to defeat Bhat by a margin of 14532 votes.
The NC leader Javaid Ahmad Mirchal won Karnah by securing 14,294 votes and defeated his rival by 6,262 votes. Similarly, Trehgam elected NC leader Saifullah Mir by casting 18,002 votes in his favour and defeating his rival by 3,626 votes.
The NC leader Qaysar Jamshaid Lone defeated his rival by 7,871 votes from Lolab, NC leader Irshad Rasool Kar won by a margin of 20,356 votes. NC leader Javid Ahmad Dar won Rafiabad by a margin of 9,202 votes; NC leader Dr Sajjad Shafi won Uri by 14,469 votes, NC leader Javid Hassan Baig won Baramulla by 11,773, NC leader Pirzada Farooq Ahmed Shah won Gulmarg by 4,191 votes, NC leader Javaid Riyaz Bedar won Pattan by 603 votes, NC leader Hilal Akbar Lone won by 13,744 votes, NC leader Nazir Ahmad Khan won by a margin of 1,132 votes, NC leader Mian Mehar Ali won Kangan by a margin of 3,819 votes, NC leader Salman Sagar won by a margin of 10,295, NC leader Khanyar Ali Mohammad Sagar won Khanyar by a margin of 9,912 votes, NC leader Shamim Firdous won Habba Kadal by a margin of 9,538, NC leader Sheikh Ahsan Ahmed won Lal Chowk by a margin of 11,343 votes, NC leader Mushtaq Guroo won Chanapora by a margin of 5,688, NC leader Tanvir Sadiq won Zadibal by a margin of 16,173, NC leader Mubarak Gul won Eidgah by a margin of 1,680, NC leader Shafi Ahmad Wani won Beerwah by a margin of 4,161, NC leader Saif Ud Din Bhat won Khansahib by a margin of 11,614 votes, NC leader Abdul Rahim Rather won Charar-e-Sharif by a margin of 11,496 votes, NC leader Ali Mohammad Dar won Chadoora by a margin of 17,218, NC leader Hasnain Masoodi won Pampore by a margin of 2,763 votes, NC leader Ghulam Mohi Uddin Mir won Rajpora by a margin of 14,313 votes, NC leader Showkat Hussain Ganie won Zainapora by a margin of 13,233 votes, NC leader Sakeena Masood won DH Pora by a margin of 17,449 votes, NC leader Peerzada Feroze Ahmad won Devsar by a margin of 840 votes, NC leader Zafar Ali Khatana won Kokernag by a margin of 6,162 votes, NC leader Abdul Majeed Bhat won Anantnag West by a margin of 10,435 votes, NC leader Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri won Srigufwara – Bijbehara by a margin of 9,770 votes, NC leader Reyaz Ahmad Khan won Shangus – Anantnag East by a margin of 14,532 votes and NC leader Altaf Ahmad Wani won Pahalgam by a margin of 13,756 votes.
Indian National Congress has won five seats in Kashmir which include Wagoora – Kreeri by Irfan Hafiz Lone by a margin of 7,751 votes, Bandipora by Nizam Uddin Bhat with a margin of 811 votes, Central Shalteng by JKPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra with a margin of 14,395, Dooru by Gulam Ahmad Mir with a margin of 29,728 votes and Anantnag by Peerzada Mohammad Syed with a margin of 1,686 votes.
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has managed to secure three seats as their candidates – Fayaz Ahmad Mir, Rafiq Ahmad Naik and Waheed Ur Rehman Para – won Kupwara, Tral and Pulwama, while Peoples Conference (PC) chief Sajad Lone won Handwara seat, CPI (M)’s Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami won Kulgam.
Two Independent candidates have emerged victorious. One from Langate where Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) Chief Er Rashid’s brother-Khursheed Ahmad Shiekh won with a margin of 1602 votes and in Shopian Shabir Ahmad Kulley won as an Independent after he was denied ticket by the NC.
Former Congress president Ghulam Ahmad Mir told Excelsior after his win that those who were ready to fight against the BJP were voted into power.
“I want to congratulate the people of Jammu and Kashmir for understanding the sensitivity of the situation and answering the call to defeat the wrong policies of the BJP,” he said.
The NC leader Tanveer Sadiq, who won from Zadibal constituency told Excelsior that he will try to come upto the expectations of the electorate.
“I want to assure them that, just as they have given me their vote, I will work to address the issues of all the voters and non-voters in my constituency. I am hopeful that the National Conference will provide a vibrant Government for the people of J&K,” he said.
Another NC leader, Salman Sagar who won from Hazratbal told Excelsior that the victory represents the manifesto and basic ideology of the NC, which advocates for the return of Article’s 370 and 35A and the early restoration of Statehood.
“This vote is a rejection of the Government decision of August 5. It also symbolizes opposition to the injustices faced by the people of J&K over the past 10 years. We aim to eliminate the development deficit in J&K and hope that the Central Government will provide full support,” he said.
The NC leader and MP Mian Altaf hoped that the elected candidates will work towards addressing the grievances of the people. “The people have given us a one-sided vote, and this is a significant victory for us, similar to that of the 1977 election victory for the NC. After achieving such a win, the responsibility of the NC has increased, and it will be very difficult for the NC to live up to the expectations of the people. The NC will never let the people down and will make progress on political issues,” he added.
