Srinagar, Oct 14: Stating that elections have opened doors for the restoration of the rights of the people of J&K, CPI (M) leader and winning candidate from Kulgam Assembly segment, M.Y. Tarigami, today said that despite the mandate, the Government is afraid of giving powers to the cabinet.
Speaking to reporters, he acknowledged the challenges the incoming Government will face. However, he noted that with the cooperation of the people and other democratic forces in the country, it will work toward restoring rights of people and resolving their issues.
“Elections were held, but despite that, they are fearful of giving powers to the cabinet. Nevertheless, doors have been opened, and we will raise our voices in a united manner to seek justice for J&K, the restoration of rights, and powers to the cabinet so that political parties can fulfill the promises made to the people,” he said.
While stating that the Government will be formed in the coming days, Tarigami said that there would be hurdles in its functioning, emphasizing that if necessary, they would reach out to Delhi and even seek support from democratic powers beyond.
“Public order lies with the LG. IAS and IPS appointments and transfers are also in his hands; he is an unelected nominee of the Government of India. We want the democratic process to flourish, but they want to keep us away from it,” he said.
He continued: “If they create hurdles, we will keep pressing. Beyond that, we will reach out to the people of the country and democratic powers, asking for their help. We want to be part of the democratic process so that the people of J&K benefit from it.”
On the revocation of the President’s rule, he said it should have happened sooner, noting that it occurred because of the people’s mandate to the incoming Government.
“Better late than never. With this, the new Government will come into existence in a few days. We are hopeful that the democratic process will flourish in J&K and that the people’s voice will be raised in the Assembly.”
Tarigami also mentioned that the BJP Government, in power since 2014, created problems in the functioning of the PDP-BJP coalition Government in J&K, which led to the suspension of the Assembly.
“That coalition had less time in power, even though we had been saying it was not a good fit. The BJP Government created problems in its functioning, leading to the suspension of the Assembly in 2018 and its eventual dissolution when there was still a possibility of forming a Government.”
He added that the BJP is “less inclined to allow democracy to flourish and the people’s voice to grow stronger,” noting that it was only after directions from the Supreme Court and pressure from the opposition that elections were held in J&K.
