SRINAGAR, Oct 18: A street vendor from Bihar was shot dead by militants in South Kashmir’s Shopian district today.
The victim, Ashok Chauhan, a resident of Banka district in Bihar, had gone to Wandana Malhora, a border village in Shopian, to collect corn when he was killed this morning. His body was later found in the Waduna area of Zainapora with multiple gunshot wounds.

“He came here around 7 a.m. to cut maize. While working, he received a call from someone offering corn. When he did not return after an hour, we tried calling him, but there was no answer. Worried, we began searching for him and found his body. We are not sure if the injuries were caused by bullets or knives, but there were marks on his throat, chest, and back,” his fellow vendor told Excelsior.

Chauhan was the sole breadwinner for his family and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
“Ashok, a corn seller by trade, had been staying in the Sangam area of Anantnag. This morning, he went to Wandana Malhora to collect corn, where he was shot dead by militants,” a police official said.
Locals discovered the body and took it to a hospital for medico-legal formalities. “He sustained multiple bullet wounds,” the official said.
Security forces have launched a search operation in the area to track down the attackers.
