JAMMU, Apr 28: Demanding roll back in hostel fee hike, a number of Jammu University students and Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists today boycotted their classes and held a massive demonstration near the Campus main gate.
Led by ABVP president of JU unit, Ashwani Sharma, the protesting students staged a dharna on road in front of the campus gate and disrupted vehicular movement for more than an hour.
The protesting students accused the JU administration and Vice Chancellor of being adamant and insensitive towards the genuine demand of roll back in hostel fee hike.
The protesting students were addressed by Ashwani Sharma and Amit Kumar who claimed that hostel fee has been hiked by 85 percent, which is illogical, irrational and in violation of the Jammu University Statues. They demanded immediate roll back in fee hike and also warned the Vice Chancellor that in case their demand is not fulfilled and the problems faced by students is not redressed properly, the students would have no option other than to launch a State wide agitation.
Others who addressed the protesting students, included Zulfikar, Bhavishya, Sanjay, Vishal, Vijay, Sahil, Sohit, Rohit, Jatin, Manmohan, Harsh Dubey, Rahul Hiteshwar, Jagpreet, Monika and Bhimi.
Meanwhile, Jammu University has refuted the ABVP allegations on hostel fee hike and said that there was no change in the room rent, which was still Rs 50 only per month since years while additional Rs 50 were being charged per boarder per month as generator and fuel charges.
According to a JU spokesperson, the hostel fee was enhanced in 2012 but the same was revised after two months following protests by students. The revised fee structure of the hostels was accordingly issued through a fresh notification and the excess fee charged vide earlier notification was either refunded or adjusted to the boarders as per the case, the spokesman explained.
