Naib Subedar to receive second highest gallantry award

NEW DELHI : Naib Subedar Bhupal Singh Magar, who killed two terrorists in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir, will receive the second-highest peacetime gallantry award Kirti Chakra from President Pranab Mukherjee here tomorrow.
Magar of the 5/5 Gorkha Rifles will be the only recipient of the Kirti Chakra at the investiture ceremony tomorrow while eight other Army personnel would be awarded the Shaurya Chakra by the President.
A resident of Rupendehi District of Nepal, Magar is receiving the award for killing two terrorists from a heavily-armed group on the Line of Control (LoC) on August 31 last year in Kupwara district.
“Magar spotted movement of six heavily armed terrorists. He immediately side-stepped his position in rugged and boulders ridden terrain and closed in towards the terrorists, despite being under fire.
“He fired a long burst, killing one terrorist and then pursued the second terrorist and injured him. While the injured terrorist was hiding behind a boulder, Magar charged towards the terrorist and killed him,” an Army release said.
Among the Shaurya Chakra awardees, Maj Mandeep Singh Ghumman of 1 Assam Rifles will get the third-highest gallantry award for eliminating two terrorists in anti-terrorist operations in the Northeast on May 8 last year.
Captain Sandeep Bhartiya of 17 Jat Regiment has been awarded the Shaurya Chakra for killing a terrorist in an operation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Captain Mahabir Singh of 9 PARA (Special Forces) has got the Shaurya Chakra for an operation on September 26 last year for eliminating terrorists who were part of a fidayeen (suicide) attack on an armoured regiment unit in Samba near Jammu.
When terrorists were holding inside the unit buildings, Mahabir Singh entered the premises and shot dead one terrorist at point-blank range, the Army release said.
Sepoy Lallawmzuala, a resident of Mizoram who was serving with the 18 Rashtriya Rifles (RAJPUTANA RIFLES), has been awarded the third highest peacetime gallantry award for an operation in Jammu and Kashmir on July 23 last year.
Lallawmzuala killed a top commander of Jaish-e-Mohammad while search and cordon of an area in the State.
Major Swagat Kumar Das of 9 Sikh Light Infantry, Major Amarjeet Singh of 44 Assam Rifles, Captain Rampreet Singh of 3 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and Naik Balwinder Singh of 22 Rashtriya Rifles (PUNJAB) will also receive the Shaurya Chakra from the President.
This is the second investiture ceremony of the year. (AGENCIES)
