JAMMU, May 1: Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu took out candle march this evening in protest against police action on a lawyer and refusal of the senior authorities to take action against the erring cops.
A large number of lawyers gathered at the spot near Nanak Nagar where the cops from Gandhi Nagar Police Station had beaten up Advocate Harshwardhan Gupta and took out candle march, which passed through Nanak Nagar and Gandhi Nagar before culminating at Gole Market.
People were also seen joining the lawyers in lodging protest against ‘human rights’ violation by some cops from Gandhi Nagar Police Station.
Earlier, in the morning, Bar president, Senior Advocate M K Bhardwaj, while addressing media persons, accused the senior police officers of protecting and shielding the erring officials.
He reiterated the demand of the Bar for immediate suspension of the erring police personnel and impartial, independent and fair enquiry by an independent agency. Mr Bhardwaj made an appeal to all the social, political organizations, civil society, public at large, students and all those who are aggrieved of such illegal action of the police personnel, to come forward to lodge protest against the police atrocities.
“We are seeking support to our ongoing agitation, which will be taken to every nook and corner of the State with the participation of common masses”, he said, adding “Bar Association will hold a meeting with the heads of various political, social, students organizations and members of civil society to chalk out future course of action”.
He extended thanks to Bar Associations of Districts and Muffasils for showing solidarity with the J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu against the unfortunate incident.
