JAMMU, Oct 30: DIG Traffic Jammu Range, Dr Mohd Haseeb Mughal today said that about 600 people die in road accidents in Jammu region including on Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
Interacting with media persons here today, the DIG said about 12,000 vehicles ply daily on highway and while roads are getting better there has been increase in accidents. He said nationally about 1.60 lakh people died in traffic accidents annually but still people are not taking it seriously. He advised people to drive carefully.
The DIG said that right from Lakhanpur to Banihal tunnel, the developmental activities are underway at highway due to which, road has become congested. He advised the commuters to be patient while travelling on the highway and follow traffic rules so that loss of precious lives in road accidents can be prevented.
Dr Mohd Haseeb Mughal said the Traffic Police is doing every effort to prevent the fatal accidents and resultant loss of lives. He shared that around 5.5 lakh challans were done for traffic violations in Jammu region last year and about 4.5 lakh challans have been issued till September end this year but that failed to deter the traffic violators and resultant accidents.

He said therefore, Traffic Police is now giving more stress on organizing awareness drives on traffic rules and spreading awareness regarding traffic rules among parents, commuters and students. The DIG appealed to parents not to give vehicles to their minor children for driving. He further appealed to people to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers and tie seat belts while driving 4-wheelers.
SSP Traffic Jammu City, M Fiesel Qureshi; SSP Traffic Rural, Vinay Kumar; SSP Traffic National Highway Ramban, Rohit Baskotra and other senior traffic officers were also present in the press conference.
