SAMBA, May 2: Former Minister and senior Congress leader, Manjit Singh, today said that Congress Party is committed for one time settlement of refugees and issues of border people.
“Congress is committed to fulfill the demands of border people and refugees”, the former Minister said while addressing a meeting of Congress workers at Vijaypur near here.
“Government of India (GoI) was seriously looking into the issue of settlement of refugees/displaced persons in J&K and accordingly, sought some details about package which the Congress led UPA Government had taken seriously,” Singh told the workers and other people who participated in the meeting.
The Congress leader said that the Government of J&K delayed the package and failed to send it timely to the Central Government.
“If the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had sent the package, the things could have been different”, Singh said, adding the State Government should take it seriously and send the package to the GoI for one time settlement of refugees/displaced persons.
If this package will be delayed again or not sent to the Union Government, then the refugees would expose the party, which is trying to create hurdles in their settlement, he asserted.
Singh also demanded reservation in Government jobs for the people living along the International Border under OBC quota.
The border people should also be given right to enjoy reservation quota like the people living along the Line of Control (LoC) have been enjoying, he added.
