AJKTWA demands early conduct of elections

JAMMU, Nov 5: All Jammu and Kashmir Transport Welfare Association led by Ajit Singh, its chairman, today urged the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, the newly elected J&K Government and the JKUT Administration to restore the democracy in the Transport Unions and hold free and fair elections of all the bus, truck, tanker, Matador, Taxi and Autorickshaw Unions in the Jammu and Kashmir.
An emergency meeting of All Jammu and Kashmir Transport Welfare was held here in which many Transporters and Unions/Association members participated. They said that heads of five Bus/Auto Unions have declared themselves as presidents without proper elections. The members demanded conduct of proper elections as being held by the Bar Association, Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry or the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Ajit Singh pointed out that elections of 5-6 Bus/Mini-bus/ Autorickshaw Unions were not held for the last 7-8 years. A group of members/ transporters met him before Assembly elections demanding early conduct of elections. They were assured that free and fair elections through democratic means will be held after Assembly elections.
Ajit Singh said that he held meetings with the transporters in Kashmir and Jammu and also met Lt Governor in Srinagar few days ago in the shape of a delegation demanding conduct of fresh elections of all the Public Transport Unions including buses, mini-buses, trucks, tankers ete. Sinha assured that Divisional Commissioners of both the Divisions will be directed to initiate process for the free and fair fresh elections soon.
