SRINAGAR, Nov 6: The president of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), Tariq Hameed Karra, today said the party welcomes the resolution passed by the Assembly seeking restoration of Constitutional and democratic rights of the people of J&K, including fully empowered Statehood along with all Constitutional guarantees.

Addressing a press conference at party headquarters here, Karra said that after the Supreme Court verdict, this is the first democratic expression of the people of J&K, reflecting the aspirations of the people.
“There should be no reason for the Central Government to deny rights and protection to the people of J&K that are already in vogue in many other parts of the country,” he added.
Karra added that Indian National Congress (INC) is committed to fight for Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and safeguarding the rights of its people to land, jobs, natural resources, and its unique cultural identity.
He said that BJP’s opposition to the resolution makes it evident that their petty political interests are not only at loggerheads with the aspirations of the people of J&K but also their sole priority, no matter at what cost.
“It (BJP) is not only disrespecting the overwhelming sentiment of the people of J&K, but are actively hindering the process of restoration of constitutional and democratic rights, guarantees like that of cultural identity, land, jobs, natural resources. They cannot claim to represent our people while acting against their rights,” he said.
The Congress president said that resolution provides a much-needed opportunity for a meaningful engagement between New Delhi and the people of J&K in the backdrop of mistrust created by the acts of BJP Government over the last several years.
Meanwhile, the Congress’ chief whip in Assembly, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat criticized the behaviour of the BJP in the Assembly, calling it “awry” and “unacceptable”.
“Today’s session went awry because of the unruly behaviour of the BJP. We had appreciated yesterday the speech made by opposition leader of BJP, Sunil Sharma, who had said that the House should be honoured and respected, and we had sworn to obey the rules. We take exception to their behaviour,” he said.
He added that once the resolution was adopted, they rose to cause pandemonium and, in doing so, undermined the sanctity and behaviour of the House, which is not accepted in any form of democratic setup.
“Three times the House was adjourned, and they even disrespected the Speaker, in whose election they were part. In the din, nothing was heard about what their issue was,” he said, adding that this is the resolution passed by the Legislative Assembly, and all should respect it.
