SRINAGAR : Curfew restrictions, imposed three days ago, in the Sehahar-e-Khas (SeK) and downtown Srinagar, were lifted this morning following improvement in the situation. There were no restrictions in any part of the Srinagar city, official sources said, adding that additional security forces and state police personnel, deployed in the SeK and the downtown have been withdrawn following improvement in the situation. Restrictions were imposed on early morning on May 1 as violent clashes erupted after a youth Bashir Ahmad was killed and few others were injured in security force firing on April 30 at Nawa Kadal immediately after polling in Srinagar Parliamentary constituency.
Shops and business establishments reopened this morning and traffic was plying on all routes as road blocks put up by security forces were withdrawn.
People were seen purchasing essentials, including vegetables, bread, milk and medicines.
The government has already appointed Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Er Farqooq Ahmad Shah to conduct the inquiry into the killing of Bashir. He has been asked to submit his report along with recommendations to government. The separatist organisations have already rejected the Magisterial probe alleging that more than 750 probes ordered during the past two decades were not seen light of the day and nobody was punished.
All separatist and mainstream parties have strongly condemned Bashir’s killing.
