Terror strikes Kishtwar

Terror has struck again, this time in Kishtwar. The abduction and brutal killing of two VDGs – Nazir Ahmed and Kuldeep Kumar – in Kishtwar’s Kuntwara area has shocked the nation once again. This cowardly and abhorrent act, claimed by the terror outfit Kashmir Tigers, an offshoot of Jaish-e-Mohammad, reminds us yet again of the challenges faced by citizens who work on the frontlines to defend their communities. VDGs like Ahmed and Kumar are local civilians trained and deployed to bolster security, especially in vulnerable areas. They represent the strength and resilience of communities determined to resist terror and violence. Tragically, in this instance, they were unarmed and completely defenceless as they went about their daily lives, grazing cattle in the forest. Their deaths reflect the ruthlessness of terrorist groups that target individuals simply for standing in support of peace and security, irrespective of religion. The involvement of OGWs, who are believed to have tipped off the terrorists, further complicates the situation, revealing a disturbing network of support for terrorism that compromises the security of innocent civilians. The purported use of the VDGs’ mobile phones by terrorists to share images of the victims only adds a sinister layer to this already grim incident. This display of violence is designed to instil fear, discourage resistance, and undermine any sense of stability in the region.
The Government has vowed to avenge this act and remain steadfast in its mission to dismantle terror networks across the region. However, the need of the hour is a comprehensive strategy to reinforce security. Terrorism is very much spread across the length and breadth of J&K, and terrorists are striking too frequently. Loopholes must be plugged immediately, building more robust intelligence networks essential to deter such attacks. OGWs must be traced and booked to dismantle terror modules. A shutdown call is a reminder that communities must stand together in solidarity against terror. While public demonstrations underscore the pain and resolve of the people, it is ultimately through a comprehensive anti-terror strategy that vulnerable areas can be protected.
