KARGIL, Nov 12: In a major breakthrough, Kargil Police have successfully solved a 26-year-old quadruple murder case, with the arrest of three suspects.
The case, which dates back to October 7, 1998, began when Bashir Ahmad reported his brother Mohammad Ali and three others-Haji Anayat Ali, Shero Ali, and Nazir Ahmad-missing after they travelled to Wardwan to purchase livestock.
Their disappearance sparked suspicions of abduction by Mohammad Rafeeq, Mohammad Fareed and Abdul Aziz.
A formal complaint was lodged by Haji Anayat’s nephew, Mohammad Yusuf, in April 1999, prompting the registration of FIR number 37/1999 under Section 364 RPC.
Though the suspects were initially detained in 1999, they were released on bail due to insufficient evidence, and the case was closed as “untraced” in 2007.
However, the discovery of skeletal remains near Kanital Glacier in 2011, later identified through DNA testing as those of Nazir Ahmad and Shero Ali, reignited the investigation.
In 2012, the court ordered the case reopening, and new evidence, along with witness testimonies, led to the inclusion of murder and robbery charges.

Despite challenges in locating the suspects-who led nomadic lifestyles-Kargil police, aided by mobile tracking and credible sources, finally arrested them in Hira Nagar, Kathua.
The suspects were accordingly placed under a seven-day police remand.
During intense interrogation, the suspects confessed to the murders and led the police team, under SHO Manzoor Hussain, on a four-day trek through rugged terrain to recover critical evidence.
The case’s resolution after 26 years reaffirmed the long reach of law and the unwavering commitment to justice.
This investigation of the case was conducted under the leadership of SSP Shree Raam, with crucial support from SP Mujeeb-ur-Rehman and Additional SP Kargil.
