AMRITSAR, May 6: A BSF constable today allegedly shot dead his commanding officer, who had filed a report against him for indiscipline, at a border post along the Indo-Pakistan border in Punjab sector.
“In a fit of anger, constable Anil Kumar fired five gunshots at Assistant Commandant J C Pandey killing him on the spot at his official accommodation. He fled while firing to keep his fellow colleagues away from the scene,” a senior BSF official said, adding Kumar was carrying a fully loaded automatic rifle.
The fratricidal incident occurred early morning at the Rattokey border post which is an important operational location of the Border Security Force.
Kumar, a resident of Rajasthan, was apprehended after a massive search operation in the vicinity of the border post.
Officials said Kumar was disturbed for the last few days as Pandey had charged him with gross indiscipline and filed a report against him.
BSF officers said the accused had more than a dozen ‘red entries’ against him in the last few years on various charges of indiscipline and dereliction of duty.
“A court of inquiry has been ordered into the incident and senior officials from the Amritsar frontier have been rushed to the spot to control the situation and talk to the troops. Everything is under control,” a senior officer said.
Immediately after the incident, heavy force was deployed to cordon off the entire area.
Eye witnesses claimed Kumar fired few rounds in the air and then barged inside the residence to attack the officer who was in his night dress.
The slain officer was commanding a company strength of about 100 personnel at the border.
Pandey’s family in Uttarakhand has been informed about the incident, they said. He is survived by a young daughter and wife. (PTI)
