Leopard captured, sent to Jammu Manda Park

MENDHAR, May 6: A full grown leopard, who had created terror in Balakote area of Poonch, was today captured by Forest and Wild Life Protection staff with the help of local villagers.
Reports said during morning a leopard which had killed at least three dozen sheep and goats of the people of Sandote area in Balakote in last 2-3 weeks came to the cattle shed of one Naseeb Ullah Khan. Only a few goats were inside the shed while most of them had already been eaten by this wild beast.
The farmer noticed the movement of leopard and displaying some courage, he in quick action closed the doors of the cattle shed and raised alarm. The other villagers with lathis and axes also reached there. The people then informed Forest Range Officer Mendhar about the matter.
After some time, Range Forest Officer, Wild Life staff along with a cage and vehicle reached there. Using tranquilizer, they managed to make leopard unconscious and then they pulled it inside a cage. There were some injuries on the front feet of the leopard and the Veterinary staff provided treatment. The leopard was then sent to Wild Life Park at Manda in Jammu.
It is pertinent to mention here that this wild beast had created terror in and around about half a dozen villages of Balakote. It had also killed many cattle includsing sheep and goats of the people in the area in last several weeks. They had stopped moving out during dusk from their houses with the fear of attack by this leopard. They have now heaved a sigh of relief.
