UDHAMPUR, May 6: In a freak accident, two pedestrians were crushed to death and two others, including a woman, sustained critical injuries when an Army vehicle went out of control at Dhar Road, here today.
Four civilian vehicles, including a car, minibus and a tractor were also damaged in the road mishap that triggered a panic on the scene.
The accident took place when an Army (MES) Tipper 99P012753E went out of the driver’s control and hit four pedestrians after ramming into a Tata Mobile bearing registration number JK14C-9435, Indica car JK14A-8687, minibus JK14B-5271 and Tractor JK14C-6571 near 35 BRTF Dhar Road.
Police rushed to the spot and took the injured persons to District Hospital Udhampur where two of them were declared as brought dead. The deceased were identified as Yuvraj Singh (19) son of Mahabir Singh of district Kathar in Bihar and Manoj Kumar (19) son of Lal Mohan Singh of Bihar. The duo was labourer and had come here in connection with work.
The injured, identified as Sushma Devi (35) wife of Gopal Singh of Chart Pakhlai and Madhan Lal (40) son of Hem Raj of Kiya Ramnagar in Udhampur district, were undergoing treatment at the hospital and their condition was stated to be stable.
Police has arrested drive of the Army vehicle and seized Tipper, involved in the accident. The driver was identified as Sepoy Amilarsan 5271 ASE Battalion.
Meanwhile, some native labourers of the deceased held a protest demonstration outside the District Hospital demanding arrangements for shifting the dead bodies to Bihar. However, Police pacified the protesters by assuring that bodies would be preserved safely till family members of the deceased reach here from Bihar.
