LEH, Nov 18: The Fire and Fury Corps marked the 62nd anniversary of Rezang La Day with a four-day event from November 15 to 18, 2024, at the Rezang La Memorial in Ladakh.
The commemoration honoured the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers of 13 Kumaon, who fought valiantly in the Battle of Rezang La during the 1962 Indo-China War.
The celebrations featured a range of activities aimed at honouring the legacy of these heroes.
The event began with a drawing competition for school children, where young artists depicted scenes related to the Indian Army and the Leh-Ladakh region.
Local children from Chushul and Tangtse also performed a cultural programme, showcasing the spirit of unity and pride among the border communities.
A men’s and women’s cricket match was also organised, bringing together participants from the local regions of Chushul and Tangtse.
One of the key moments of the celebration was the scaling of Point 5935, now named in honour of Maj Shaitan Singh, PVC, the leader of 13 Kumaon who made the ultimate sacrifice at Rezang La. The peak now stands as a symbol of his courage.
The event also recognised the families of fallen soldiers with a special felicitation for Veer Naris (war widows) from the area, acknowledging their resilience and sacrifice.
On November 18, the final day of the commemoration, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the memorial, with the Chief Guest, the General Officer Commanding of Ultimate Force, senior Army officials, veterans, and ex-servicemen paying tribute to the fallen soldiers.
Veterans also shared their experiences in a special interaction, strengthening the bond between the serving personnel and those who had served before.
A film screening on the Battle of Rezang La provided a moving account of the soldiers’ bravery and endurance.
The four-day commemoration served as a powerful reminder of the values of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism that define the Indian Army.
It also reinforced the bond between the military and the local communities, inspiring future generations with the heroism of the soldiers who defended the nation with their last breath.
