SRINAGAR, Nov 24: Triggered by the tragic Tengpora Srinagar accident, which claimed the lives of two minors, the Traffic Department has launched an extensive crackdown over the past several days, targeting underage and unauthorized drivers.
According to details, more than 3,000 vehicles, including two-wheelers and four-wheelers, have been seized in Srinagar for various violations.
Officials have stated that the drive aims to ensure road safety and prevent minors from operating vehicles, focusing on driving societal change.
“We are addressing underage driving across the city and will continue this initiative in the coming days with the involvement of all stakeholders to make it more impactful,” SSP Traffic City Muzaffar Ahmad Shah told Excelsior.
The SSP added that the ongoing action has sparked a broader discussion, with people questioning the practice of allowing minors to drive. “I am seeing a positive change. People are talking about it, and it’s leading to greater awareness,” he said.
Regarding the continuation of the drive, the SSP emphasized the importance of collective effort.
“If all stakeholders play their part, this menace can be eradicated entirely, ensuring fewer violations, reduced fatalities, and smoother commutes,” he said.
He also noted a visible shift in social behaviour, with more parents refraining from allowing their minors to drive and taking greater accountability.
“This social change was overdue. While we will continue doing our part, society must play its role,” he added.
On the ground, commuters are already noticing an improvement in daily travel conditions, particularly during rush hours across the city.
It is worth noting that on Saturday, IGP Traffic Mohd Suleman Choudhary convened a meeting with all unit heads to address the traffic scenario in J&K.
During the meeting, officers were instructed to remain visible on the roads, especially during peak hours, and to intensify efforts against underage driving, overspeeding and other violations.
