The nation and the President have paid glowing tributes to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, the most celebrated intellectual of modern India who was the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize. A versatile and a genius, Tagore has immensely and richly contributed to the great heritage of this nation. He was a source of inspiration to the freedom fighters that had launched a struggle for liberation of the motherland from foreign yoke. Tagore’s great contribution is that he spoke of universalism, of humanity not compartmentalized in ideological or other compartments but free and fearless to interact for the larger interests of humanity. Tagore believed that while upholding universal culture and values, one could at the same time promote and feel proud about one’s own cultural and moral values. No other intellectual has impacted the contemporary Indian mind as much as by Tagore. Gandhi ji travelled to Kolkata to meet Tagore and seek his blessings for the free India. Tagore is the author of immortal nationalist poetry including his one particular composition that was adopted by the Government of India as its national anthem. We salute this great son of India and feel proud to walk in his footsteps.
