6 e-vehicles to ferry visitors, two-wheelers to ply as usual

JAMMU, Dec 2: The authorities at the University of Jammu (JU) have barred the entry of four-wheelers within the campus from December 5, 2024.
The decision aimed at making the campus green and to avoid random parking by unidentified individuals within the institution.
A centralized parking facility has, however, been made operational near the residential area in the campus to park 300 vehicles of the staff.
From there (centralized parking facility) onwards, the staff members will have to walk to their offices.

While two-wheelers will ply uninterrupted on the campus, those without the facility will be taken to their destinations in 6 e-vehicles provided by the University itself.
Meanwhile, the parking facility at the Zorawar Singh Auditorium will continue to function as usual but only on the days of events, and the parking facilities in the student hostels will also be allowed to function with certain limitations.
Addressing media persons at the varsity today, Dean Students Welfare, Prof Parakash C Antahal, said, “We had been planning to implement this decision for a long time to make the campus green, but it was delayed due to the non-availability of the designated parking facility within the campus.”
“Now that a parking facility with space for 300 vehicles has been created near the residential area, we’ve been implementing this decision.”
Admitting that the proposed move will definitely create minor issues for the students as well as other visitors initially, Prof Antahal said, “To ensure smooth implementation of the ‘no-vehicle zone,’ we have decided to run 6 e-vehicles within the campus to ferry the visitors.”
While two such vehicles, according to him, are already operational, four more will be hired in the days to come to ensure a smooth transition to the “no-vehicle zone” in the campus.
The Dean Students Welfare further said that the Jammu Smart City Limited has also been requested to increase the number of bicycles within the campus so that visitors can use this facility to reach their destinations.
“We’ve also requested the Jammu Smart City Limited administration to start e-buses from catchment areas like Satwari to Bikram Chowk and Panjtirthi to Jammu Tawi Railway Station to ensure that visitors in general and students in particular use this facility to reach the University,” claimed Prof Antahal.
Additionally, the DSW said that two-wheelers will ply on the campus as usual without any bar on their entry.
He said that before taking this harsh decision (barring entry of four-wheelers), the student organizations have been taken on board and assured that the parking facilities in the student hostels will be allowed to function as usual but with certain limitations.
Asked whether the parking facility at the Zorawar Singh Auditorium will also function normally, he said, “It will continue to work as it is, but this facility too will be used during the events held in the auditorium only.”
Prof Antahal was flanked by Dean Planning and Development, Prof Meena Sharma, Convener GCTF JU, Prof Piyush Malviya, Member Security GCTF, JU, Dr Deepika Slathia, Deputy Chief Proctors, Office bearers of various associations and student representatives, during the press conference at the Jammu University.
