WASHINGTON, May 14: US law exempts heads of State and heads of Government from certain potential inadmissibility grounds, State Department Spokesperson, Jen Psaki, told reporters here, while fielding questions on granting a visa to the BJP leader Narendra Modi.
Declining to “get into any greater detail,” she said the US is looking forward to working with the new Indian Government.
“As you know, we don’t talk about visa applications. We’re looking forward to working with the new Indian government when they’re elected. But I’m not going to speculate on that given, obviously, the results haven’t been announced yet,” Ms Psaki remarked.
Asked whether “all fairly installed” foreign leaders automatically qualify for a visa to come to the US on official business, the State Department spokesperson replied in the affirmative.
Heads of State and heads of Government are eligible for A1 visa classification, she said and added that US law exempts foreign Government officials, individuals – including heads of State and heads of Government – from certain potential inadmissibility grounds under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).
