China opposes S Korea hyping of fabricated information on ‘Chinese Spies’

BEIJING, Dec 13 : China opposes South Korea hyping up fabricated information about so-called “Chinese spies” and linking its internal problems to Beijing, Chinese Special Representative on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming said on Friday.

On Thursday, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol condemned the opposition for obstructing South Korea’s prosecution of foreigners for spying. In his address to the nation, Yoon cited two relevant cases of detention of Chinese citizens this year.

“We are surprised and dissatisfied with the relevant statements of the South Korean side. China does not comment on South Korea’s internal affairs, but strongly opposes South Korea’s linking its internal issues with factors related to China, inflating fabricated information about so-called ‘Chinese spies’ and discrediting normal trade and economic cooperation,” Liu said on X.

Such statements are not conducive to the stable development of the bilateral relations, the diplomat said, adding that the Chinese government has always required its citizens abroad to abide by local laws and regulations.

“China calls on South Korea to handle cases involving Chinese nationals fairly, report such cases to China on, and effectively protect the security, legitimate rights and interests of Chinese nationals,” Liu said.

This summer, three Chinese nationals were detained in South Korea for allegedly using a drone to film a United States aircraft carrier anchored in the port of Busan. In November, another Chinese national was detained for using a drone to take pictures near the National Intelligence Service headquarters in Seoul.
