UDHAMPUR, Dec 14: Congress Party in Udhampur district staged a demonstration against the Railway Ministry for not addressing the demand to rename the Udhampur Railway Station.
Led by Sumeet Magotra, the District Congress Working president, scores of Congress workers and supporters marched in a procession to Udhampur Railway Station, where a heavy police force was deployed to prevent them from entering the premises.
A minor scuffle ensued between the protestors and police, following which slogans were raised against the Railway Ministry and Central Government.
Speaking to the media, Sumeet Magotra revealed that a deputation led by him had submitted a memorandum to the Railway Superintendent 10 days ago.
The memorandum, according to him, demanded renaming the station as “MCTM Udhampur,” in honor of Captain Tushar Mahajan, who sacrificed his life fighting terrorists.
He criticized the railway authorities for their inaction and alleged negligence, which he said had erased Udhampur’s name from the station’s identity.
Magotra highlighted the inconvenience faced by travellers, including Army personnel and tourists, who struggle to book tickets or locate the station due to the absence of the name “Udhampur” on the railway portal and information boards.
He also accused the local MLA of misleading the public by falsely claiming that the issue had been resolved and the name restored on tickets and boards.
Magotra warned of a larger agitation if the corrections are not made within a month. He assured that, failing action, a “Rail Roko Andolan” will be organized by the end of this month to press for their demands.
