JAKARTA, Dec 16: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto plans to pardon tens of thousands of prisoners on compassionate grounds, Human Rights Affairs Minister Natalius Pigai said on Monday.
“The main considerations for the pardons are compassion and a commitment to reconciliation, both of which are key priorities for the president,” Natalius said, as quoted by Jakarta Globe newspaper.
Approximately 44,000 inmates are expected to be proposed for presidential pardon, including political prisoners. The pardons are partly aimed at reducing overcrowding in the country’s prisons.
The president aims to release prisoners suffering from mental disorders, serious illnesses such as HIV, and drug addicts, enabling them to receive rehabilitation treatment, as well as inmates convicted of insulting the head of state, juvenile and elderly prisoners.
