Provide free ration, seeds to farmers: JKKU

RAJOURI, July 7: All Jammu and Kashmir Kissan Union has demanded six months free ration, seed and fertilizers for Kharief crop besides Rs 500 crore special relief package to the drought-hit farmers of the State.
Addressing a farmers’ dharna at Doongi in district Rajouri today, president of the Union, Ashok Sharma (Ex-MLA), stressed the need of formulating a comprehensive farm policy for the State, so that losses caused to the standing crops, orchards and live stock due to drought, excessive rains, floods, hail storm and various diseases could be managed by providing them compensation.
Referring to long dry spell that prevailed in Jammu region during the last three-four month and not releasing of timely water in canals, followed by wind storm, hail-storm, the former legislator demanded a Rs 500 crore package to compensate the farmers. He also pleaded for strengthening local self Government by incorporating 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments in J&K Constitution to decentralize the powers. He also demanded that farmers be issued Kissan Credit Cards and Land Pass books before November 2012.
Susheel Jamwal, general secretary, founder members Ch Qamar Hussain, Ishtkhar Ali Khan and Vinod Sharma also addressed the gathering and projected problems of the farming community. Sarpanch Raj Kumar, Ch Slam Din, Yashpal Sharma and Ch Noor Hussain were also present.
