SRINAGAR, Dec 18: A massive fire broke out today at a receiving station in South Kashmir’s Pulwama town, causing extensive damage and disrupting electricity services across the area.
An official said that the blaze originated in the workshop of the station, damaging nearly 50 transformers undergoing repairs. The flames spread to the roof of the main building but were contained by firefighters before causing further destruction.
The firefighting operation, which involved heavy use of water, severely impacted the station’s infrastructure, disrupting power supply to Pulwama town, 50 nearby villages, the district hospital, and the district court complex. “It appears that inflammable material in the workshop accidentally ignited, leading to the fire. We are assessing the losses, and restoration is already underway. Panels are being dehydrated to resume power supply as soon as possible,” an official said.
Later, Deputy Commissioner Pulwama Basharat Qayoom and local MLA Waheed Para visited the station, urging authorities to expedite the restoration process.
