SRINAGAR, Dec 24: While terming the caste census as the only solution, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary and Member Legislative Assembly (MLA), Ghulam Ahmad Mir, today targeted Member Parliament (MP) senior National Conference leader, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, for holding protest against the reservation policy outside the CM’s residence and described it as a mere “camera show”.
Mir made these remarks during a press conference held as part of the party’s nationwide campaign against Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments on B.R. Ambedkar.
“It has become a fashion now. He is a responsible MP of a responsible party. If he had issues or concerns, he could have met the Chief Minister and other ministers. It was all for the camera,” Mir said, adding that he (Ruhullah) should have discussed the matter within the party.
Mir highlighted the Supreme Court ruling on reservation, which, he said, is being followed nationwide. “The resolution we have brought also emphasizes these issues,” he added.
He stressed that the best way to address the issue of reservation, both in the country and in J&K, is to carry out a caste census.
“The solution proposed by Rahul Gandhi will resolve the issue because it provides clarity on the numbers, including in J&K.”
In response to BJP’s demand for Omar Abdullah’s resignation over his failure to resolve public issues, Mir said: “BJP created these issues in J&K over the last 10 years. Omar has just assumed office. There are challenges, and he must be given time to address them.”
Mir also demanded an apology and resignation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, calling them “very unfortunate and highly condemnable.”
“In his zeal to attack the opposition during the special discussion on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of our Constitution, the Home Minister made disparaging remarks about Dr. Ambedkar, which cannot be tolerated,” he said.
Mir urged the Prime Minister to seek Shah’s resignation, stating, “The remarks are extremely distasteful and disgrace the legacy of one of the most esteemed leaders of our independence movement.”
He accused the BJP of attempting to dismantle the constitutional guarantees that empower the downtrodden and backward classes. “The Constitution ensures their progress, but BJP seeks to destroy those guarantees,” he said.
Mir asserted that the Home Minister’s hatred towards the Constitution and its makers disqualifies him from holding office. “He should resign, or the President should dismiss him,” he said.
The Congress leader also accused the BJP Government of evading real issues like inflation and other pressing problems faced by the people.
